David Porcelijn studied flute, composition and conducting and thus was in the perfect position to write two collections of pieces for the flute to introduce players to the modern repertoire and techniques.

His Communications for easy flute and modern flutist are much shorter than the usual repertoire pieces, sometimes as small as 15 bars. Although the pieces are not called études or studies, they are evidently meant in this way. Specific techniques they deal with are different meters, greater rhythmic complexity, different notations for time, accentuation, atonal melodies and more.
