With her album ’Oops! I Did It Again’ Britney Spears suddenly enjoyed international success, and although Christina Aguilera started her career shortly before the millennium, she saw her greatest success with the album ’Back to Basics’ in 2006, and the Colombian singer Shakira made her international breakthrough with ’Whenever, Wherever’.
Arguably the biggest star of the 2000s was Beyoncé. Known internationally for her solo success, she started as a member of the hugely successful R&B girl group Destiny’s Child, whose debut album ’Dangerously in Love’ included two singles which made it to No. 1 in the US charts in 2003.
The King & Queen of pop, Michael Jackson & Madonna, were still very much at large, and Mariah Carey made a come-back in 2005 with her album “The Emancipation of Mimi”, and in R&B, Alicia Keys and Rihanna were among the most successful artists of the decade.
