Sergei Prokofiev belongs to the great Russian composers of classical modernism. His work is characterized by drama and daring harmonies in combination with lyrical elements and a turning to traditional stories and fairy tales.

Among the most performed works of classical music worldwide is Peter and the Wolf, but also his ballets Romeo and Juliet and Cinderella have achieved world fame.

Prokofiev gained particular importance as a composer of film music for early (Soviet) cinema. He had a lasting influence on the genre and was quoted in film music by John Williams and James Horner.
