Description

Die Kantate "Ihr Menschen, rühmet Gottes Liebe" BWV 167 gehört zu den ersten Werken, die Bach als Leipziger Thomaskantor schrieb. Die Kantate ist für das Johannisfest bestimmt und erklang erstmals am 24. Juni 1723 in Leipzig.

Die knappe und beschwingte Kantate ist mit vier Vokalsolisten besetzt und zurückhaltend instrumentiert; nur der Schlusschoral "Sei Lob und Preis mit Ehren" ist für vier Stimmen und Streicher gesetzt, wobei der Sopran von einer Zugtrompete verstärkt wird. Der Text ist zum Teil wörtlich aus der Evangelienlesung von Lk 1 mit dem Lobgesang des Zacharias abgeleitet und preist die Gnade und Liebe Gottes, der sein Heilsversprechen durch Jesus erfüllt, dem Johannes Weg und Bahn bereitet hat.
